Wild Mama!

Making sure that we’re bang on trend with celebrity trends requires the (often distracting) job of flicking through the newspapers, web pages and

celebrity magazines on a daily basis. With a cup of tea and a Twix by my side, it can be quite indulgent … After a while, you know which ones are going to serve you best. The Sun isn’t one of them. So coming across Penny Lancaster, this afternoon, in a pair of Wolford Animal Print Tights, on the pages of The Sun online was quite a shock.

Obviously I wasn’t expecting a Vogue inspired trend report. But I think there should definitely be some form of law in place to restrict fashion un-informed journalists from writing fashion related articles lead by headlines such as ‘No Need To Fork Out On Maternity Wear When Your

Married To Rocker Rod Stewart.’

They were implying that heavily pregnant, and looking incredibly stylish, Penny Lancaster was wearing Rod’s vintage animal print tights. She was actually wearing Wolford Animal Print Tights!

It appears that this seasons accessory isn’t the new Mulberry, it’s a baby bump! Follow the style of the stars, and pair yours with a fabulous pair of patterned tights!! Order now!

Recession impacts slow growth in maternity wear sector, despite increase in birth rate

Monday, November 1st, 2010

The birth rate is currently at its highest pace since the 1970’s; despite this, the maternity wear sector, as a whole, grew only 1% between 2007 and 2009. It accounts for only 1% of the overall women’s wear market.

The impact of the recession; economy and unemployment, lead to pregnant women spending less on maternity wear, choosing to save the money to be spent on the arrival of the new born baby.

In addition to the recession, the slow growth in maternity wear may also have been affected by ethnicity; A quarter of all live births are to mothers born outside of the UK; particularly Pakistan, Poland and India. It has been reported by TGI Data, that Polish speakers are more price conscious, opting to purchase from value retailers Primark and Peacocks.

This slow growth has also been reflected in the sales of maternity tights. Despite an encouraging growth in celebrity influenced tights, priced

between £12 – £32; Maternity Tights have grown only 2% in the last six months, highlighting the trend of the maternity market as a whole.

Celebrity fashion has been crucial in driving clothing sales forward during the recession; perhaps celebrity maternity collections, like Holly Willoughby’s will start to positively impact sales of maternity wear.
